Booking Yourself a Photoshoot for Your Birthday & Sometimes Making Beautiful Portraits on Side of the Road

First, I’m going to just dive in and tell you 2 reasons why you should book a photoshoot for your birthday.

  1. Celebrate yourself! Get dolled up in what makes you feel your absolute best. Indulge in your creative side and being your authentic self. The energy of a birthday shoot is unmatched and it’s the greatest feel-good moment to yourself. You don’t have to do birthday balloons or a cake. You can do whatever you want. It’s YOUR season, hello!

  2. Mark the moment. Sometimes, all we have from the past year is low quality cellphone videos, selfies and photos of our cats. We don’t take the time to be super present with ourselves. Your birthday is the perfect opportunity to re-center and document who you are and are becoming.

For Liz’s 23rd birthday we set up a photoshoot in order to do something fun to mark this new season in her life. I wanted her to feel beautiful and confident and I wanted to give her an outlet to express herself and just a day to have fun.

She planned her ‘fit (HELLO- the metallic stars on her face?!) and her location, but sometimes, shoots just unfold in ways that you really can’t plan for.

Originally, we were planning on taking a peaceful day drive to the beach to just create. Liz loves the beach and I knew it would be perfect for her spirit! However, we realized Cruisin’ on the Coast was that weekend so that was NOT going to happen. Then, she had a vision of Fontainebleau State Park which mixes a beachy aesthetic and Louisiana cypresses. After driving over an hour to her dream location, it was closed! The sun was going to set in the next hour and a half so we needed to make a decision quick. Liz was definitely bummed, but hello, golden hour was coming so I knew we just needed to find a place to make the magic and that she had to trust me.

After deciding to at least head back in the direction we came, I pulled over. I made a decision to stop at an empty, unfinished storage unit building in Robert, LA.

Look, the sun. was. setting. This birthday was not going to be spoiled because of a park being closed.

And, an unfinished storage unit?! There were many challenges but it all worked out because though she brought many outfit changes- this one just really worked in this setting.
